LSV FAQ

LSV, what does that stand for?

To put it simply, LSV signifies any vehicle which is classified as a “Low Speed Vehicle.” LSVs are street-legal, requiring a minimum of 20 mph and a maximum of 25 mph. They can be driven on roads which are signified with 35 mph limits or less. Most LSVs are small, and are categorically slow.

Each LSV has to meet all of the safety standards as outlined by the U.S. Department of Transportation. Some requirements include:

  • A safety windshield which fits the LSV

  • Must contain three-point safety belts

  • LSV Must be equipped with clearly capable turn signals

  • Headlamps and brake lights must also be clearly capable and visible

  • A horn, mirrors, and windshield wipers are other aspects which are required.

  • Each LSV is equipped with a unique VIN number and DOT on-road tires

LSV, possible to drive without a driver’s license? (ie. child/younger driver)

If a potential driver does not possess one of the following:

  1. State learner’s permit

  2. State driver’s License

Then despite being a lower speed of street legal vehicle, the license requirements to operate the vehicle remain the same.

LSV: Insurance required to operate?

Similarly to the rules regarding whether or not those without a license can drive an LSV, all LSVs are classified as street legal vehicles. On all public roads, the LSV has to be insured under an auto policy. This policy must include coverage pertaining Personal Injury Protection and Property Damage Liability.

However, your state may have different rules regarding operating vehicles without insurance. Be sure to check your local DOT site at the link here.
